After Tom Brady won his 7th Super Bowl and further cemented his stature of being the winningest quarterback in NFL history, the talk of the bestowing him the unofficial title of the greatest athlete of all time (GOAT) had become louder.
Fast forward I find myself in a silly discussion on FB(where else?) someone pointed out that Serena Williams to date has won 23 Wimbledon single titles and 14 doubles titles with her sister Venus, yet was never the subject of a ‘GOAT’ conversation. One Fool came close to asserting that since she was a woman, and not competing against men, that she could never hold the title. I asked him if he really wanted to go there, and he hastily retracted his asinine comment, but then followed with more Neanderthal statements. I made several points, one of which that in a 3 hour football game, there is only actually 7 - 8 minutes of play, whereas in individual sports there is considerable less down time, and you do actually have to be in shape. Anyway, giving sir-miss- a lot the last word I left the mind numbing conversation.
Now I’m old school, so the GOAT for me will always be Muhammad Ali. But I don’t mind saying that for her accomplishments, Ms. Williams is second to none when it comes to living athletes. Yeah, I said it.
